an afternoon of recordings condensed into one trip of electric guitar, sampling, fm synthesis, coding, and several layers of feedback. the music isn't in a hurry to go anywhere, ideas bubble up, we slowly chew, then we find new ways of moving

seven tracks of skittering, scraping, and grooving percussion, audio verité, and prepared strings. Mitchell's combination of academically trained chops and the intuition and imagination fostered by several years of more 'out' playing comes together on his first solo album. some times ass shaking, some times brain scraping, all times joyful

studio recordings from fall 2020, engineered by Ben Livingston
pandemic restlessness channeled into a weekend of recording. Mitchell was living out of town so we made sure to hit all of the spots while he was in town for inspiration during these sessions. in contrast to previous recordings, we have a pro sound courtesy of ben...we even cheated and added some overdubs.
"Lambert’s guitars come out firing on every track, and soon enough Mobley joins him with simple, sturdy drumming. The best parts of the album—like the slow sandstorm of “Boston Ether Monument” and the loping riffs of “The Whole Dose”—evoke the purposeful shamblings of New Zealand’s Dead C

Two tracks recorded sometime between 2018 and 2019. The first piece is named in honor of the canal that runs from LSU to downtown Baton Rouge. I lived in a house on East State Street for almost 10 years adjacent to this canal with all of its trash and stray cats. John Fahey's "Sunflower River Blues" inspired the title choice. I used an acoustic guitar with a contact mic, some processing in Max, and an electric guitar / metal file combo. I moved in early 2020, and made this piece a few months later for a Wumbo mixtape.
The second piece comes from a live session I did at KLSU in the winter of 2019. I did one long improv jam, and capped it with a cover of The Velvet Underground and Nico's "I'll Be Your Mirror". The title comes from the Velvets' "Rock and Roll" which, to me, signifies optimism in the face of loss.
Thanks to the boys from Wumbo for giving me the idea to make the track in the first place. And the staff at KLSU for making my live room possible. I felt like this was a heavy time in my life and it feels cathartic to have these recordings out there. The cover photograph is a tree in my backyard which is much bigger than it was a year ago.
